Old Testament Survey

The world, the history and the message of Israel's Scriptures

10 lessons

For many believers the Old Testament is a somewhat mysterious land: difficult names, distant peoples, laws that seem to come from another world. And yet these are the Scriptures Jesus read, quoted and explained. When, on the road to Emmaus, he wanted his disciples to understand who he was, “beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself” (Luke 24:27).

This course takes you on a journey through the whole picture, with no need for academic knowledge.

In the first module you will discover the world of the Old Testament: how its books are organized, the lands and peoples of the ancient Near East, the great stages of Israel’s history and the daily life of a people who lived among tents, fields and the Temple.

In the second module you will enter the heart of the message: one God among many idols, a “sacred history” unlike the myths of the neighboring peoples, and the covenants by which God bound himself to his people.

In the third module we will honestly face the questions many people ask: who wrote these books, how to read the harshest pages, and what the Law means for us today.

As in every BereaWay course, we will follow the method of the believers in Berea: receive the text in its world, examine it carefully and connect it to the whole of Scripture, all the way to Christ.
