New Testament Survey
The world of Jesus and the apostles, and how their writings reached us
Opening the New Testament means stepping into a fascinating world: Galilean fishermen and Roman officials, Pharisees and Greek philosophers, synagogues and the roads of the empire. In this world God spoke in a definitive way: “God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son” (Hebrews 1:1-2).
This course gives you a map to find your way.
In the first module you will see how the New Testament connects with the Old, and what happened in the four centuries between Malachi and the birth of Jesus.
In the second module you will enter the world of the first century: the land of Jesus under Roman rule, the Temple and the synagogue, Pharisees and Essenes, Greek culture, the philosophies and the social life that form the backdrop to the pages of the New Testament.
In the third module you will discover how the writings of the apostles reached our Bibles: manuscripts, copies and the recognition of the canon.
In the fourth module you will get an overview of the books: the Gospels, Acts, the epistles and Revelation.
We will follow the BereaWay Method: receiving the text in its world, examining it carefully and connecting it with the whole of Scripture, so that the Word becomes life.
