Introduction to Biblical Hebrew

Reading the first words of the Old Testament in its own language

10 lessons

Almost the whole Old Testament was written in Hebrew. You do not need to be a scholar to approach this language: all it takes is curiosity, a little perseverance and a good method.

This course does not aim to have you translate entire books on your own. Instead, it wants to open a window for you: to recognize the letters, read a verse aloud, understand why a word is translated the way it is, and make good use of the tools we have today.

In the first module you will learn the alphabet, the vowels and the signs that make reading possible. In the second you will discover how nouns, adjectives and sentences are built. In the third you will meet the heart of the language, the verb, and learn to use interlinears and lexicons in your personal study.

It is a concrete way of living out the BereaWay Method: to examine the Scriptures like the believers in Berea, it is valuable to know how the words God chose sounded and how they were built.

Every lesson includes reading exercises on well-known verses, such as Genesis 1:1 and Deuteronomy 6:4.

What you will learn

  • Read and write the Hebrew alphabet with its vowels
  • Recognize nouns, the article, prepositions, pronouns and suffixes in a verse
  • Understand how the Hebrew verb works: root, stems and aspects
  • Use interlinears, lexicons and Bible software wisely
